‘Will they make friends?’
‘Will they eat their lunch?’
‘Did I pack their PE kit?’
When our children start school, we have enough to worry about without adding, ‘What on earth is a split digraph?’ to that ever-growing list!
Synthetic Phonics, or just phonics as it is known in schools, is a way of teaching children to read by first teaching them the letter sounds and then blending the sounds together to make whole words.
When my eldest child was about two years old, I noticed that he was really struggling to make some of the sounds he needed to make in order to speak so I thought back to the training I had received when the idea of teaching phonics in school was all shiny and new – the activities we did really helped improve his speech. This was what first inspired the idea of Tiny Tots Phonics, a group that could help children with their speech development, letter recognition and early reading and writing skills.
After fifteen years as a Primary School Teacher, I now have three young children of my own and after huge delays due to Covid19, we are finally up and running! Funics Phonics is a fun group for toddlers and preschoolers (Ages 2-5) and their parents and carers. My main aim for Funics sessions is for the children and adults to enjoy a range of activities together in a friendly, safe, supportive environment.
Each session will focus on a different sound and the letter or letters that make it. Parents will be taught phonics terminology so it is familiar to them when their children start school and the children learn all about letters and their sounds through playing.
Everyone learns in different ways so Tiny Tots Phonics sessions include a range of fine and gross motor activities, there will be songs, movement, creativity and a whole lot of fun! Tiny Tots Phonics is taking place on Wednesday mornings during term-time at The Church Hall, St Andrews Church, Church Lane, Eaton, Norwich.
I have started sharing a few tips and activities on the Tiny Tots Phonics Facebook and Instagram pages so please give them a like or follow.
