Want to know even more about what’s going on during the school holidays? There is a full list of everything for families over on the school holiday pages HERE
1. Indoors activities –
It’s the UK, so chances are the weather might not be optimal for getting out and about all the time. So, if you’re wanting some indoor activities ranging from home cinema to living room picnics, here are some ways to keep the Mini Mumblers entertained indoors.
2. Visit your local library –
We love the library, not just for the books, but because they often run FREE events over the school holidays. For a list of local libraries and their opening times, check HERE.
3. Park and Cafe combo –
What can make your 104857th trip to the park more bearable? A nice cuppa and treat from a nearby cafe, of course. We’re putting together a post with a list of parks with cafes, but our current favourite is The Feed at Waterloo park – they do a great sausage bap, too!
Here is the interactive map of ALL Norwich play areas.
Head to the Parks and Play Areas with or near Cafes post.
4. Mini Mornings at Vue –
Mini Mornings are run every Saturday and Sunday morning from 10am, plus every day in the school holidays (with availability likely to change depending on when your child’s holidays occur). Showing kids movies and new kids films, Vue’s Mini Mornings ensures fun in the cinema for all the family.
£2.49 for children and adults.
5. Visit Norwich Cathedral –
It’s always lovely to see the looks on my Mini Mumbler’s faces when they wander around the cathedral as it is just so unlike anywhere they have ever been.
The cathedral often put on family events during school holidays, so keep your eye out on our events calendar/school holiday pages for more on those.
6. Woodland Walks –
We put together a list of as many Woodland Walks as we could find…and we still missed some. If woodlands are your happy place, then take a little look and see if there’s a new one for you to make your way to over half-term. Let us know HERE if you find any hidden gems that we can add on!
7. Sainsbury Centre, UEA –
Sainsbury centre often run FREE Family Sundays, or just head there for a wander round and a cup of tea.
(The Family Sundays are suitable for all ages. No need to book).
8. Walks around Norwich –
Why not have a wander around the city and grab a coffee at one of the independent shops? (or cake…I am partial to several sweet treats from Figbar or Bread Source!)
There’s a great city walk from the north side of the city, by Nuffield Health Gym on Barrack Street. Walk past the gym on your left as if you are going in to the car park, and then walk past Birketts Solicitors, it a bit hidden, but you will then find Jarrolds bridge which spans the River Wensum. Cross over and go left. This takes you past some wonderful scenery, Cow Tower, Norwich Cathedral and through to Bishops Gate Bridge. From there, you can walk along the riverside even with a buggy, and watch all the boats and ducks.
9. Beaches
I love, love, love the beach! Having grown up in the Midlands, it still blows my mind that we can ‘pop’ to the beach in half an hour. What could be better than blowing away the cobwebs with a beach walk followed by a chippy tea?
10. Holt Country Park –
A place for beautiful woodland walks, Holt Country Park is just a short drive from Holt and is open every day of the year. As well as the walks, you can spot the wooden sculptures dotted around and have a play on the play area with climbing frames and swings.
This will bump up the budget, but as a special treat you could combine it with a trip to The Pigs pub at Edgefield – this pub always comes up as one recommended for families!
Where do you love to go that’s FREE or LOW cost? Let us know HERE!
Don’t forget…
To take the pressure off – children don’t need entertaining every second of the day. It’s ok if they have time to get bored and to find their own things to do!
And finally, our TOP TIP for saving the pennies during half term…
FOOD – Take snacks when you go out so you’re not tempted to buy something. They might be a bit of a pain in the bum to put together, but packed lunches save a lot of money on days out too!
