MUMBLER BUS CHALLENGE! #MakingBusTravelEasier
We love an adventure. And we love a challenge.
When Katrin at Norwich Mumbler set us a challenge last month to go and find a new route via public transport as part of her partnership with Konectbus, I suddenly realised I’ve been missing a trick. Whilst my daughter embraces being parachuted into any outdoors spot there’s also something else she loves doing even more: getting on a bus. I’d forgotten this of late.
Talk about excited.
So we looked at the routes and decided we’d go to Wymondham and explore a route I’ve been meaning to try for ages, which circles Wymondham Abbey. And quickly discovered it’s a possible contender for one of her all-time favourites!
The app was really simple to use and we navigated our way on the bus with ease. After our bus dropped us off, we had a takeaway lunch from ‘Merv’s Hot Bread Kitchen’, which had amazing pastries, and ate it on the 17th century Market Cross in the Market Place.
Starting from here, the route goes through Market Street and turns left down the quaint and quirky Damgate Street. There is a right turn on the far side of the bridge and the route follows the path along the River Tiffey, through Becketswell recreational area. Eyes to the right and you’ll eventually see the gorgeous Abbey on the other side of the river.
Fortunately, I’d popped her wellies on as I was unsure of the terrain. What a stroke of luck! The route is peppered with spots to paddle. It’s only a mile round from the bus stop, but it took us three hours due to all the paddling! The ultimate paddle was on the other side of the bridge on Becketswell Road. We then walked back up the quiet country lane, through the abbey grounds and back to the market.
Also a winner is a potential excursion on the choo choo steam train from Wymondham Abbey to Dereham (see midnorfolkrailway.co.uk for details). The abbey itself is always a sight to behold. There are kissing gates to enter, but an accessible entrance for pushchairs on the corner of Church Street.
True story: “Mummy – this has been the BEST DAY EVER!”
More bus journeys it is then.
