After my third baby made an unexpected arrival in record time on my in-law’s bathroom floor, things were never quite the same again in more ways than one, and third time round, my pelvic floor was really struggling to function.
Eighteen months later, despite regular pelvic floor exercises (PFEs), I had abandoned any hope of returning to running, and with my bladder prolapse symptoms causing everyday issues (such as peeing when I coughed or sneezed, feeling I needed to pee a lot and a significant feeling of heaviness low down), I serendipitously came across Hypopressives.
Hypopressives is a whole body technique combining eight different postures with cycles of breathing, including a deep exhalation and breath hold. An involuntary vacuum is produced, activating the pelvic floor and core muscles, drawing them upwards and inwards in an extremely effective way. This has a transforming effect on the pelvic floor and core and works to diminish the issues mentioned above and others such as diastis recti, pelvic organ prolapse, incontinence, problems using tampons, posture problems and hernias. This is especially relevant to mums and women going through the menopause, but not exclusively as many women can start having problems at different times.
As I researched further I read many stories from women who had also tried PFEs initially, but then experienced significant symptom improvement with Hypopressives. As a former Gynaecology nurse, I was immediately struck by the testimonials, and the potential positive impact it could have, so I decided to train with UK Hypopressives to become competent in the technique myself and be certified to teach others.
After 2 months of a daily breathing and posture focused 10-minute routine, I was able to start running again – everything felt SO much better, to my delighted amazement. My problematic symptoms had gone, and have not returned. Maintenance for me now is 10 minutes practise each day.
