After my last pregnancy, I was really struggling with symptoms of pelvic floor and core weakness – which is much more common than my panicked head would have me believe.
Research indicates that 1 in 3 women experience symptoms, and as many as 50% of mums have some degree of ‘drop’ or prolapse following pregnancy. Menopause is also a time when problems tend to surface, with urge and stress incontinence being more common, whether or not we’ve had children.
By strengthening the muscles within the deep core and pelvic floor, many symptoms can be significantly improved (although I’m pretty sure the big companies marketing incontinence products would prefer that we just carried on buying from them..!).
I was diagnosed with a moderate prolapse, which honestly felt devastating. After 18 months of pelvic floor exercises and still getting nowhere with my symptoms (uncomfortable heaviness, leaking, tummy gap, that falling out feeling and my favourite exercises still a big no-no), I stumbled across Hypopressives. It was the first I’d heard of this unique breathing technique, originally used within postnatal physio in Spain, during the 1980’s.
Hypopressives are a simple yet incredibly effective way to deeply strengthen the pelvic floor and core – reducing or eliminating symptoms, and I was inspired by the success stories I read, and the countries using it within postnatal care – France and Belgium.
After completing my training and 4 weeks of just 10 minutes practise a day, I was already noticing improvements in my symptoms.At three months my symptoms were, to my relief and delight, no longer noticeable. My tummy gap of 2.5cm had also closed completely, my tummy had noticeably flattened and my core felt strong for the first time in years. I now run regularly – symptom free – something I never thought would be possible.
I completed my teaching competencies and now coach women and men in Norfolk and beyond, who want to protect and strengthen their core and pelvic floor, or who have mild to moderate pelvic floor symptoms.
