Want to know even more about what’s going in during May Half Term locally? There is a full list of everything for families over May Half Term HERE
1. BEACH.IT.UP. – My fingers are so very firmly crossed that the weather will at least be nice enough for a beach trip as we haven’t been for soooooo long! For a list of Norfolk beaches and what Mumbler parents say about them, have a look at the Beaches page.
2. Visit your local library
Some libraries are doing half-term events, see post HERE for details on Norwich Millennium Library For a list of local libraries and their opening times, check HERE.
3. Embrace the Big Outdoors
We are so lucky to have all the fantastic nature on our doorstep: Have a wild family day pond dipping at RSPB Strumpshaw Fen (from £3.50), Meet The Migrants Trail at Old Buckenham Country Park, join in the activities at Holkham Estate (£5 charge per day) or simply hit up one of the amazing local parks (check out our Parks & Playgrounds Post)
4. Check Out Some Local Craft Fairs
The Walled Garden Day is hosting a plant sale with stalls and children’s fun & games in their beautiful gardens, there is also the Food & Crafts Fair with Live Music at Old Buckenham Country Park and finally the free family fun day at Pilling Park Community Centre.
5. Visit Norwich Cathedral
It’s always lovely to see the looks on my Mini Mumbler’s faces when they wander around the cathedral as it is just so unlike anywhere they have ever been. Lucky for us, the Cathedral are hosting Children’s Craft Sessions on Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 31st May and it is only £2.50 per child plus treasure trail around the Cathedral. (We also recommend a post craft treat at Bread Source!)
6. Woodland Walks
We put together a list of as many Woodland Walks as we could find…and we still missed some. If woodlands are your happy place, then take a little look and see if there’s a new one for you to make your way to over half-term. Let us know HERE if you find any hidden gems that we can add on!
7. The Fire Pit: Kids Club Cinema
Escape to the Fire Pit for an afternoon of kids cinema, We’re back with Norfolk’s newest and most exciting travelling cinema – Broomshed, and it’s now time to bring out the mics and get your Sing on. Think yummy pizzas, popcorn and a chilled vibe. £5 per person, under 3s free.
8. Walk around Norwich
Why not have a wander around the city and grab a coffee at one of the independent shops? (or cake…I am partial to several things from Figbar!) If the children need to let off a bit of steam, there’s always Chapelfield Gardens for a run around or the park on top of Castle Quarter, where we have hosted our Mumbler Big Day in the City events in the past. Plus check out some of the free events from the Norfolk & Norwich festival happening around the city. running until May 28th.
There’s a great city walk from the north side of the city, by Nuffield Health Gym on Barrack Street. Walk past the gym on your left as if you are going in to the car park, and then walk past Birketts Solicitors, it a bit hidden, but you will then find Jarrolds bridge which spans the River Wensum. Cross over and go left. This takes you past some wonderful scenery, Cow Tower, Norwich Cathedral and through to Bishops Gate Bridge. From there, you can walk along the riverside even with a buggy, and watch all the boats and ducks.
9. Learn All About Jet Fighters…
Younger children can enjoy searching the displays for some Dinky jet fighters whilst the adults learn all about the fascinating history of RAF West Raynham. Parking and entry are free.
10. Get Crafty at Block Print Dragon Tales (8-13 Years)
Join visual artist Lizzie Figura-Drane and create a dragon using block print and foam, then bring your precious creature’s story to life in a haiku poem. Pay what you can but booking required.
